FLORENCE – Earl Corrothers is a certified Sherpa coach, but he doesn’t help adventurers scale Mount Everest. He helps executives climb the leadership ladder.
“Successful leadership is about helping teams achieve their desired results,” Corrothers told members of the Florence Rotary Club on Monday, Oct. 20.
“People typically are promoted to leadership because of their personal skill sets. When they reach the management level, they have to manage, lead and motivate other people.”
Sherpa is an acronym for six behaviors essential to successful leadership, Corrothers said. He explained to Rotarians how each behavior connects to a leader’s ability to achieve results.
Self-awareness – A leader must be aware of personal strengths and weaknesses and how they affect management, communication and motivation of the team.
Here and Now – The leader and the team must focus on current challenges, not past problems.
Expectations – A leader must communicate expectations to team members well, and understand how well the team listens and responds.
Relationships – A leader must foster productive relationships with the team and among team members.
Perceptions – What team members think about their leader and how well their leaders understands what they think about them affects performance.
Accountability – The leader and the team must faithfully deliver the desired results, and take responsibility if they don’t do so.
“No leader will reach their full potential until they pair personal skills with the best management behaviors,” Corrothers said.
As owner of CRE Leadership Coaching LLC, he helps people analyze their behaviors and polish their leadership skills. He helps them get to the peak of performance by acknowledging the behaviors that prove problematic, by refining tools and techniques to navigate the personal weak spots and by removing frustrations that get in the way.
“It starts with self-awareness … because I don’t have any magic beans,” Corrothers said.
